On August 5, 2026, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai released an internal memo announcing the most drastic personnel and structural reorganization in the history of Google's AI department: Demis Hassabis, who has led DeepMind for many years, stepped down as CEO to become chairman and Alphabet's chief scientist, distancing himself from daily operations to focus on AGI strategy; former CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu took over the daily struggles of developing the Gemini model and the developer ecosystem; even more shocking, Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee who has served for 27 years, left with three senior researchers to found Discovery Loop. Following the news, Alphabet's stock price dropped about 4% in a single day. The capital market voted with its feet, expressing concerns over the loss of core technical personnel. Behind this major overhaul, is it a comprehensive acceleration of Google's AGI strategy, or a sign of organizational loss of control under fierce competition in everyday model iterations?

Jeff Dean, former Chief Scientist at Google and co-founder of Discovery Loop

    4% Drop and a 27-Year Farewell

To understand the intensity of this reorganization, one must first recognize what those leaving are taking with them. Jeff Dean has worked at Google for 27 years, and as the 30th employee, he participated in the core construction from early search infrastructure (MapReduce) to deep learning frameworks and the Gemini multimodal model. In the developer community, he is regarded as the soul of "holding up half of Google's technological history." The other three co-founders who left with him to establish Discovery Loop are equally significant: Sanjay Ghemawat is the founder of Google's distributed systems, Oriol Vinyals is the VP of research at DeepMind, and Quoc Le is a co-founder of Google Brain.

The collective departure of these four senior researchers directly triggered a violent reaction in the capital market. Alphabet's stock price fell about 4% in a single day after the personnel changes were announced. For a tech giant of such size, a 4% evaporation of market value in one day is no small matter, reflecting deep concerns about the loss of Google's core technical personnel and the short-term stability of model iterations.

In developer communities like Hacker News, shock and regret became the mainstream emotions. Developers generally believe that this is not a routine generational transition but a physical migration of half of Google's AI infrastructure and cutting-edge research. The departure of Jeff Dean and others takes away not only personal intellect but also the long-accumulated engineering tacit knowledge and foundational architecture experience within Google. When the foundations supporting Google's search and AI dual engines become unstable, the market will naturally question whether Google can maintain its original engineering iteration pace in the upcoming arms race of large models.

Hassabis's Split: Stepping Away from Daily Operations to Focus on AGI Deep Waters

As Jeff Dean and others left, another main line of Google's AI underwent fundamental changes. Demis Hassabis stepped down as CEO of Google DeepMind to become chairman of DeepMind and Alphabet's chief scientist. According to the official statement, he will free himself from daily operations to focus on AGI strategy while continuing to serve as CEO of Isomorphic Labs (AI pharmaceuticals).

Hassabis's departure is not marginalization but is based on Google's judgment of the current stage of AI development. As large models compete increasingly fiercely in text generation and multimodal understanding, Google believes AGI has entered a deep water area that requires top scientists to tackle full-time. Daily model iterations, product landing, and commercialization are consuming a lot of management energy. Liberating Hassabis from the administrative affairs of CEO allows him to fully invest in foundational breakthroughs in AGI and the commercialization challenges of Isomorphic Labs, which is a long-term vision commitment from Google.

This adjustment appears particularly special in the industry context. As leading AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic become embroiled in safety alignment and throttling issues, even triggering industry safety anxieties like "1134 AI employees jointly hit the brakes," Google chooses to let its chief scientist bypass conventional safety throttling controversies and focus on scientific discovery itself. Hassabis's transition is essentially a physical split in Google's organizational structure between the "long-term AGI vision" and "short-term model commercialization." Google attempts to use an independent team to tackle foundational scientific breakthroughs that require more than a decade to yield results while leaving the close market competition to another team.

Koray's Struggle: Taking Over Daily Development and Commercialization at Breakneck Speed

Taking over Hassabis's daily management responsibilities is former DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu. He has worked in the DeepMind team for 13 years and is a top expert in deep learning. After being promoted to Google DeepMind SVP, he reports directly to Sundar Pichai and is fully responsible for the development of the Gemini model, cutting-edge AI research, the Gemini App, and the developer team.

Koray is taking over a highly competitive landscape. The current large model market is no longer dominated solely by Google; OpenAI's GPT series holds a first-mover advantage in the developer ecosystem, Anthropic's Claude is closing in on long text and coding fields, and domestic newcomers like Yue Zhi An Mian are also showing strong explosive power in specific dimensions. As revealed in a recent article titled "From 18th to First: How Kimi K3 Surpassed Claude and GPT in Long Context Coding," competition in vertical fields like coding and long context has entered a white-hot phase, where the speed of engineering iteration becomes the key to survival.

Koray's biggest challenge upon taking office is how to prove that Google is not falling behind amid the onslaught of competitors like GPT and Claude. He must accelerate the engineering landing of Gemini and the construction of the developer ecosystem. This means that DeepMind's focus will inevitably shift from "academic and cutting-edge exploration" to "product and engineering struggles." Some developers have expressed concerns: after Hassabis's departure, will DeepMind's original academic and cutting-edge exploration genes completely give way to product and engineering genes, leading to stagnation in Gemini's foundational infrastructure innovation? Whether Koray can maintain foundational innovation in models while handling the life-and-death speed of commercialization will directly determine Google's position in the next generation of large model competition.

Jeff Dean's External Venture: Departure of Industry Veterans and Ecological Extension

The departure of Jeff Dean and others to start a new venture is the most dramatic scene in this reorganization. Their newly founded Discovery Loop is positioned as a public benefit corporation (PBC), aiming to utilize AI to automate the scientific research process, including proposing, running, evaluating, and iterating thousands of concurrent experiments, and exploring "recursive self-improvement," which means using AI to create more powerful AI.

It is noteworthy that Discovery Loop has a capital and computational relationship with Google. Alphabet is the founding investor of Discovery Loop and has committed to providing computational support in the first year. The first round of investment is led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures. This arrangement indicates that the departure of Jeff Dean and others is not merely a "talent loss" but a form of "external extension" of Google's ecosystem.

Within large companies, due to compliance reviews, departmental walls, and short-term financial report pressures, it is extremely difficult to advance explorations that are cutting-edge and carry certain uncontrollable risks, such as "recursive self-improvement" and "automated scientific methods." By investing and providing computational power, Google has spun off this part of the business, allowing it to develop independently in an environment unbound by the cumbersome regulations of large companies, while also transforming it into an ecological ally through founding investment and computational supply. This is a high-level "internal incubation externalization" solution. Essentially, Google is binding the demand for cutting-edge "AI for Science" with computational power; once Discovery Loop achieves breakthroughs in automated scientific discovery, the foundational computational ecosystem of Google Cloud will directly benefit. The developer community is excited about the "automated scientific method," believing it can break the bottleneck of human sequential iteration, but expresses deep safety concerns about "recursive self-improvement" detaching from human cycles.

Organizational Tension and Final Judgment: Acceleration or Loss of Control?

In summary, the major overhaul of Google's AI leadership is neither a simple acceleration of AGI nor a loss of control in daily model iterations, but a strategic trade-off based on competitive pressure. Large companies have generated organizational tension between long-term vision and short-term commercialization, and Google has chosen to use "cutting" to allow Hassabis to focus on the long term, while "externalizing" Jeff Dean to explore cutting-edge areas, and letting Koray bear the short-term struggles.

Sundar Pichai's internal memo characterizes this change as a "peaceful separation" and an "attempt to try new things." This three-pronged structure attempts to maintain the vitality of cutting-edge exploration while strengthening the market competitiveness of commercial products. For developers and industry observers, the success or failure of this structure depends on two core indicators: first, whether Koray can hold the line in the struggle, ensuring that the Gemini series models do not fall behind competitors in iteration speed and engineering capability; second, whether Discovery Loop can truly feed back into Google's foundational computational ecosystem, transforming cutting-edge exploration into commercial increments for Google Cloud.

Google's reorganization is a proactive adaptation to the current AI competitive landscape. As competition among large models shifts from parameter battles to engineering and ecosystem battles, physically isolating the academic and engineering factions within the organization may help reduce internal friction. However, the risks are equally evident: the loss of core veterans is difficult to compensate for in the short term, and Koray faces extremely low tolerance for market pressure. Whether Google AI can achieve a soft landing in this strategic reorganization of cutting and externalization will be determined by the model iteration data over the next year.
