OpenAI has suspended some internal operations and strengthened security controls due to the possibility that the autonomous cyber attack capabilities of its new model, Astra, may have reached the highest risk level. In an announcement on the 7th, OpenAI stated that Astra has shown significant progress in agent-based coding and cybersecurity. It explained that the Critical capability level cannot be ruled out at this time. Critical refers to the highest risk level in cybersecurity, where the model can identify zero-day vulnerabilities and develop attack code without human intervention. OpenAI has temporarily halted operations that do not meet the new security standards related to Astra, and the enhanced measures include isolated testing environments, restricted network access, and protection of model weights. Universal monitoring has been introduced for Astra's training and evaluation to continuously monitor risky behaviors. This action follows a security incident at Hugging Face last month. OpenAI plans to have Astra's capabilities tested by relevant government agencies and some AI safety organizations.
