The Moscow Exchange plans to launch a depository for cryptocurrencies by the end of 2026. The depository will account for and support operations with digital currencies, creating a separate independent structure for working with crypto assets. Cryptocurrency will be regarded as a digital asset rather than a bank deposit, which requires accurate records of ownership and access procedures for transactions. The launch of the depository will enhance competition among the exchange, banks, and brokers, potentially leading to improved services and conditions for clients. On August 4, 2026, Vladimir Putin signed the law "On Digital Currencies and Digital Rights," which will come into effect on September 1 and sets the rules for crypto exchanges and depositories. Trading in cryptocurrency will only be permitted through licensed intermediaries, and the use of cryptocurrency for payment of goods and services in Russia will remain prohibited.
