Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency in the world, has a market value exceeding one trillion dollars. However, a deep analysis of its structure reveals a characteristic that may surprise many: the absence of a formal security team, in the traditional sense of the industry. This apparent paradox generates intense debate within the community, questioning the resilience of the system and the true cost of its decentralization.

After all, how can a network that protects such a fortune operate without dedicated defenders, especially when known vulnerabilities come to light? This is the crux of the discussion raised by Luke de Wolf, a cybersecurity expert with extensive experience in protecting critical infrastructures, during his participation in The Bitcoin Matrix podcast. Thus, his reflections raise an alarm about the nature of Bitcoin Security and the inherent challenges of a truly distributed system.

Bitcoin secures over a trillion dollars in value. It has no security team.

It was never finished, and it was never safe by default. Two known vulnerabilities let unlimited data flood the chain, and Bitcoin Core decided they weren't worth fixing. In cybersecurity that's called... pic.twitter.com/PiktygO2YE

Bitcoin: The Critical Infrastructure of the 21st Century

Luke de Wolf compares Bitcoin to critical infrastructure, much like power grids or gas pipelines, which he has defended throughout his career. Therefore, to understand the depth of his analysis, it is essential to comprehend what makes Bitcoin so fundamental. The cryptocurrency represents not only a financial asset but a global and permissionless payment network that operates 24/7 without the need for centralized intermediaries.

In this sense, Bitcoin's ability to withstand attacks and maintain its operability is crucial. The concept of the CIA Triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability) is often applied to information security. In the context of Bitcoin, availability becomes the most vital element, as highlighted by de Wolf. After all, a network that is not available does not fulfill its function as money or a medium of exchange. Thus, ensuring that the network remains operational and accessible to all users is a fundamental pillar of Bitcoin Security.

Known Vulnerabilities and the Bitcoin Core Debate

The central point of Luke de Wolf's argument lies in the existence of two known vulnerabilities, which he describes as CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures), that allow the blockchain to be flooded with unlimited data. Indeed, these vulnerabilities enable the so-called 'inscriptions' or 'ordinals', contents recorded directly on the blockchain. However, the Bitcoin Core development team, which maintains the network's core software, reportedly decided not to fix them, considering them non-priority or not representing an existential risk.

Furthermore, the Groq Llama 3.3 70B, in its verification, confirms the existence of vulnerabilities such as CVE-2024-35202 and CVE-2024-52914, which can be exploited by attackers. The debate is intense: is this a failure of the Core team, or a design decision in an open system? For de Wolf, ignoring a risk does not make it disappear; it is like "burying your head in the sand" in cybersecurity. Consequently, he argues that the absence of a formal security team and the failure to address these flaws represent a significant challenge for Bitcoin Security.

Spam as DDoS and the 'Hidden Fee' in Bitcoin

One of the direct consequences of these vulnerabilities, according to de Wolf, is the use of spam as a form of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on the Bitcoin network. By allowing "unlimited" data to flood the blockchain, users who wish to conduct legitimate transactions end up paying higher fees to have their operations included in the blocks. This translates into a "hidden fee" imposed on everyone using Bitcoin as money, directly affecting its utility and accessibility.

Therefore, the issue is not just technical but also economic and philosophical. The increase in fees, in turn, may exclude users with lower purchasing power, compromising the vision of universal and barrier-free money. The freedom to use the network must be preserved, and the "hidden fee" generated by spam represents a significant obstacle to this economic freedom and individual financial sovereignty.

BIP-110, Forks, and Node Runner Sovereignty

The discussion deepens with the mention of Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 110, about which Luke de Wolf has "turned" from skeptic to supporter. BIPs are documents proposing changes to the Bitcoin protocol, and their debate often involves terms like 'soft fork' and 'hard fork'. A soft fork is a backward-compatible update, while a hard fork breaks compatibility, requiring all participants to update their software. The current debate also addresses the URSF (User Activated Soft Fork) and the "intolerant minority", a concept that evokes the precedent of UASF (BIP-148) in 2017, where users activated a soft fork.

    • The Power of Node Runners: Luke de Wolf emphasizes that 'node runners' (full node operators) are the true 'hodlers' who hold power in the network. Unlike miners, who validate transactions and create blocks, full node operators validate all the rules of the protocol. Therefore, the decision to accept or reject a change in the protocol, such as BIP-110, ultimately resides in the ability of these individuals to run the software they desire.
    • Self-Custody and Ownership: For the individual, the ability to run a full node represents the ultimate realization of self-custody and private ownership of their Bitcoin. It is not just 'not having your keys, not having your coins', but also 'not running your node, not having your rules'. Thus, the debate over BIP-110 and the vulnerabilities is a struggle for maintaining the integrity of the network, where the voice of the individual user, via their node, is the final line of defense.
    • Financial Privacy: The fight against "spam as DDoS" also connects to privacy. Network congestion can be seen as a way to hinder private and cheap transactions, making the use of Bitcoin more costly and, in certain contexts, less accessible for those seeking discretion in their finances.

Editorial Analysis Bitcoin Block Team: The Cost of Hidden Centralization

The discussion about Bitcoin Security, vulnerabilities, and the debate around proposals like BIP-110, through a libertarian lens, reveals a fundamental tension: that between idealized decentralization and the realities of governing a leaderless system. Therefore, the absence of a centralized "security team", far from being a flaw, can be seen as the essence of Bitcoin's resilience. In a world where governments and large corporations exert control over money and transactions, Bitcoin offers an alternative where decision-making power is distributed.

However, this distribution does not eliminate the need for robust and sometimes painful debates. Luke de Wolf's criticism of the Bitcoin Core developers is not an attack on decentralization, but a call for continuous vigilance. After all, any point of power concentration, even if informal, must be questioned. The "failure" to correct certain vulnerabilities, as pointed out, can be seen as an inherent risk in any governance process that is not strictly hierarchical, or as a bet on the resilience of community consensus over a more interventionist approach.

For the Bitcoin Block Team, the strength of Bitcoin lies precisely in its ability to operate without asking for permission from anyone, be it a central bank or a group of developers acting as a "hidden authority." Therefore, the solution to Bitcoin Security challenges, such as vulnerabilities and spam, should not come from centralized imposition, but from the maturation of the market and the voluntary collaboration of network participants. The pressure from node operators, open debate, and the search for technical consensus are market mechanisms in action. They shape the protocol from the bottom up, preserving individual sovereignty over their digital assets.

It is worth noting that any state intervention in this context, whether to "regulate security" or "protect users," would be an invitation to centralization and a compromise of privacy. The cost of such intervention would be the loss of the very essence that makes Bitcoin unique: its resistance to censorship and its character as an unconfiscatable private property. Thus, the fight for a secure Bitcoin is ultimately a fight for individual financial autonomy and economic freedom in the face of a state that is often slow and ineffective.

Finally, the resilience of Bitcoin is not measured by a formal committee, but by the diffusion of knowledge, community vigilance, and the willingness of individuals to defend their own sovereignty. It is a reminder that the true security of $1 trillion lies in the strength of its protocol and the active participation of its users, without the need for a central sheriff.
